Beyond Malibu

Beyond Malibu is a Young Life backpacking camp located in the Princess Louisa Inlet 100 miles north of Vancouver, British Columbia, where calm inlet waters wind through lush, green rain forests, rising to crystal clear alpine lakes and meadows, rock, and snow capped peaks.

July 21-28, 2018

What is this trip?
7-day backpacking trip in the Coastal Mountain Range in British Columbia, Canada. One night on either end of the trip will be spent at "base camp", leaving 5 days for hiking and camping. Young Life owns a “traditional” Young Life summer camp just two miles away called “Malibu Club”, hence the name, “Beyond Malibu”. We will hike a mountain with the intent to summit together, led by two-three wilderness trained guides. This will not necessitate scaling any walls or cliffs, or any prior experience in camping or hiking.

Who is it for?
This trip is typically reserved for juniors or seniors who have already attended traditional YL summer camp, but if you know someone else who might be interested, please contact us! This trip also will require significant physical activity--but, can be tailored to most physical levels. If you have questions about the physical preparedness, please contact us!

How do we get there?
We will fly to Seattle, take a bus or van North into Canada (this includes a ferry trip), and then take a boat ride from the landing in Egmont, BC to the Beyond Malibu base camp. This will require a passport or passport card!

What is the spiritual component of the trip?
Young Life offers two types of trips--outreach and discipleship. This is a discipleship trip--a place to not just hear about the Christian faith, but to grow in your faith and in your relationships with Jesus and each other. Young Life leaders from BuncoYL be along for the experience and will lead Bible studies and group activities at camp each night. If you have questions about the spiritual content of this trip, contact Jess Williamson, jwillia8@gmail.com

Why should I/my child attend?
Beyond Malibu is an incredible, once in a lifetime, opportunity. 1) The location is nothing short of breath-taking--the incredible view and first-hand experience feeds our souls. 2) This trip will take us out of our comfort zones--this trip requires us to face our own limits and learn how to ask for help from both each other and from God. There is growing empirical evidence that experiences like this trip can be overwhelmingly positive on adolescent development. 3) Climbing a mountain together leads to deep, lasting, relationships. Kids will get to know their peers in new, deepened, ways and will continue a deeper connection with their Young Life leader and God as well.

Is it safe?
There are some physical risks involved in this trip, as with any wilderness trip. That being said, the perceived risk is much higher than the actual risk involved. Trip guides are trained in excellence, certified in advanced first aid and CPR, and have travelled the routes many times before guiding a trip. For more information about the safety of the trip, check Beyond Malibu's note to parents here.

Is it hard? Is it worth it?
This trip is definitely hard. Beyond Malibu might be the most challenging endeavor you've participated in yet. It also costs time and money. BUT, it is ABSOLUTELY worth it. It is an experience that you will carry with you for the rest of your life.

Trip Price
$995 plus airfare to Seattle
This includes all other transportation (charter bus, ferry service, 3 hour boat ride to base camp), camp fees (includes backpacks, tents, food, guides, other supplies, etc). We are doing our best to keep this trip affordable, airfare will be purchased together at a discounted group rate. We anticipate the total trip price being under $1500. This trip would cost over twice this amount done through a private outfitter.

However, Young Life's camp scholarships and fundraising opportunities are reserved for outreach camp trips. If finances are a barrier to your student attending this trip, email Jess at jwillia8@gmail.com or call our office
